More Plagerism and Twitter Bullshit

Do you like those cutesy, stop-motion Amazon Kindle commercials? Wish that photographers Angela Kohler and Ithyle Griffiths made more of them? Well… Good news… Sorta.

The World Wildlife Fund (the other WWF) has hired LA’s Viral Factory to do what advertising does best. Rip-off other people’s ideas. Granted we just complained about this trend with HATEBOMB: Reboots, Remakes and Rip Offs. And we need to keep doing so. Like some substitute high school teacher, it’s our job to remind everyone that “you can’t take credit for appropriating other people’s work.” Or something like that.

Seriously. Do Creative Directors just sit around and see what’s popular on YouTube? If so, is there an iPhone app that can replace them? That would really speed along our plans to open an automated, cat-run digital shop. After all, in the YouTube game… cat videos have the upper-hand.

Non-cat videos and more after the jump. Read the rest of this entry »

“… With a brand new invention”

You might remember reading about how NASA mounted a “Golden Record” on the side of space probe that was blasted to the far edge of the galaxy. Basically it was a time capsule approach to all sorts of Earth sounds, in the event that an alien race had a phonograph and wanted to hear whalesong. If you’ve seen Star Trek: The Motion Picture or Star Trek IV, then you basically know the whole story.

However, a new video that keeps disappearing online since its January 2010 debut holds similar appeal. In it, freaky Irish identical twins with blonde Kid n’ Play coifs do a mash-up of “Under Pressure” and “Ice Ice Baby,” with MC Hammer backup dancers. All this is framed inside a Missy Elliot type video. And did we mention this whole thing springs from a Simon Cowell hosted reality show?

It’s literally like someone condensed the last three decades into one, singular streaming video. That YouTube hates and takes down every second. Hence, explaining the video quality that hasn’t been seen since aficionados traded dubbed VHS tapes.

Seriously though, this a tough find. Maybe NASA has plans for it…

Viral Videos Down Under

Earlier, we shot down the idea of having some controversial figure pitching for your brand. With this whole Tiger Woods nonsense, it seemed a good idea to mention the poor logic in having a former Vice honcho pitching the latest in lesbian footwear fashion (Teva YouTube). But apparently, we need to amend that statement. This approach seems to have created a media sensation right now, in the middle of nowhere – aka Australia.

We are of the opinion that advertising and selling things through media indoctrination, only really works on the simple-minded. Which maybe explains why suddenly everyone in Australia is eating Read the rest of this entry »

HATEBOMB: Wieden+Kennedy Rockumentary

I wish Charles Bronson was around… To fucking hunt down and murder the people involved in this YouTube atrocity. Literally. I think all he had to go on, was some Vietnam buddy of his got burgled. For that, he annihilated scores of miscreants plaguing society’s everyday venues…

Goldblum - About to get Bronsoned

In that hope… of starting some sort of online “fatwah,” I’m re-posting this viral put out by  Wieden+Kennedy. In which they remind everyone that Adidas loves the World Cup. Nike apparently hates soccer and promotes it like Paris Hilton forced to write a term paper on Kirkegaard. “Couldn’t we like… just… write something funny instead?”

Yeah, if your idea of “funny” is watching the tired old chestnut of “Rock Mockumenarty,” getting Read the rest of this entry »

Muppet’s Bohemian Viral

1080p now on YouTube

1080p now on YouTube

Soapbox Films is the production company quietly behind the new Muppet’s viral video campaign. They also got on here five days back, when we mentioned the new Swell Season video (LonerBoner), as part of the Jason Segel YouTube hit. Two mentions in one week, for clips gaining YouTube traction? Not bad, in a world populated by bogus stuff like the HBO Imagine Cube instillation, that took BBDO and The Barbarian Group over a year to develop. What? You have no idea what I’m talking about? Maybe it’s because no one linked this HBO stunt to you, whereas you can’t navigate anywhere online right now without hitting this Muppets viral.

.

Approaching 1-million hits on one YouTube channel alone , in the first 24 hours -- we’re guessing the 1-day of Muppet money was better spent than the 365-days of HBO cash. Which I think all comes down Read the rest of this entry »

Everyone’s The Media

Recently, I skipped a Q&A and was remiss that it wasn’t up on YouTube the next day. Why bother going, when it’s assumed that with a room full of iPhone wielding media types, somebody is going to post this shit online? It’s just expected today that everyone has a cameraphone, which means “the media” is covering the event.

John Milius Speech - Click On Image

Which becomes a humorous branch of where advertising is going – ie: creating “stunts” that get blogged about. As in “good luck with that.” Soon Loner Boner will be posting the inaugural “Snake Oil Award,” which celebrates phantom achievements claimed by those in the area of social media advertising.

In the meantime, this is a fantastic find (YouTube) for all those looking for whimsical song about the confluence of “nice guy image” with “celebrity.” With Jason Segel extolling (Randy Newman style) how they can be combined for a bisexual hook-up. I saw some mention of this and sure enough – there it is, in high quality cameraphone video.

Viral Video Redux

"I Love America"

"I Love America"

How is it, that something that was hot years ago… is back? It seemed like viral videos had all but vanished, except for an occasional teenage transvestite (or Old Dog’s Seth Green) defending Britney’s honor. In 2008, no client was going pay for your media department to produce a viral video campaign.

That’s all changed. Advertisers want “in” on where people are lurking. Which is Facebook, Twitter, etc… All despite any accepted metrics for measuring a brand’s social media presence. Just imagine what Wendy’s would pay to get in on LOLCats… Now, everyone is able to Read the rest of this entry »
