I thought that Avatar was a big deal because of how it was pioneering something new and great about 3D technology. It did look pretty cool.

Also, I thought the fundamental difference between Avatar and Jar Jar was that all the motion capture stuff was done in real time, as they were “filming”, so they could create the environment and “act” in it in real time instead of having to tweak it ad infinitum afterwards.

Also, I’m a little late to the party, but I just discovered this blog. Great stuff!

To my mind, the best year in animation was ruined by Ferngully 3D – I mean, Avatar. After all, MoCap works rather well with more cartoonish characters (Monster House), so obviously there is no innovation here whatsoever. Ebert compared this film to Star Wars. What he didn’t realize is that said film, while a milestone, opened the gates to the kind of popcorn cinema that’s making Hollywood a mockery and Avatar is a prime example.

Agreed entirely. Avatar is hype, little substance, and unfortunately, by the looks of it, it will make umpteen dollars. Give thanks Peons, your overlords have seen fit to release another blemish to add to your blighted landscape.

Story is every thing. CGI should be sued to help tell the story when absolutely necessary, not just because they have the money to do it.

I thought this was a website about Muppets. Who cares about Jim Cameron? They should have retired the name Jim when Henson died. Me want more Animal!!!!!!!!!
